What an amazing 3 years it's been! A huge thank you to all my lovely patients, I am so overwhelmed with the kindness of gifts, cards and messages I've received over the last weeks (plus a few pounds heavier - perks of working next to a cake shop! 🧁😂) And a huge thank you to this amazing team who have spoilt me lots and succeeded in making me cry yesterday evening! I will not miss the 120 mile commute, ferries and travelodges... but I will miss the incredible people - patients and colleagues- I've had the pleasure to know over the years.

As many of my patients already know, we have a bit of a change coming this year...

I am so excited to announce that I will be joining the team at RMA Sports Injury Clinic 🤩 @rma_sportsinjuryclinic

RMA is situated in Newport, with modern equipped treatment rooms and a unique gym/rehab area. Their ethos is something A M Chiropractic couldn't agree with more - rebuild from injury, maintain healthy strong bodies, and achieve optimal health and performance 💪

Many of my patients already benefit from the brilliant work the clinicians at RMA do, so I'm very excited to be working along side them to bring you the best care possible.

I will officially be starting in 2 weeks time, on Monday 3rd April.

A big congratulations to our weightlifting patient

A big congratulations to our weightlifting patient @zoltan_mihalyi who successfully qualified for the British and International championships at his last GPC - GB London competition 👏💪

Zoltan competed in the Squat, Bench and Dead-lift categories. After ongoing knee and shoulder injuries it was looking a bit sketchy as to whether he would be back to full strength and ready in time, but with hard work and determination he made it - so a huge well done to him 🙌

I also have to note (and he won't mind me saying) that Zoltan is one of those rare patients that does get told off (in a nice way 😂), and I don't tell many people off! His favourite thing is to come into clinic with zero pain-free range of motion after pushing an injury too hard in the gym, and needs it to be fixed when he leaves... We normally manage it 😉🙄😂 Although frustrating for the therapist (🙋‍♀️) it's this determined mindset that makes him an athlete to be reckoned with 🏋️‍♀️

One day you'll learn to be a bit kinder to your body, but in the mean time it's a pleasure to put you back together again! Keep smashing it 😍💪

One of my favourite success stories 😍🐶

I was sent this video the day after treating the lovely 13yr old Flots, who has arthritis and spinal nerve compressions. Swipe to the last video to see the before and what a difference there is! 👉

Before video: unstable on back legs, downwards slope of lumbar spine, tripping of front legs, external rotation of back legs and wide stance "waddling" gait for stability, spinal curvature to the right, and lots of stopping/slower paced walking.

After video: Much more stable on back legs, therefore more upright and balanced in lumbar spine. No tripping, better balance and walking "straight" rather than wobbling left and right across the path. Less external rotation of back legs as muscles able to stabilise the hip joint. Faster, more motivated walking pace.

This feedback made my day 🥰 Flots was a real gentle giant and such a pleasure to treat. 13 is a great age for his breed and size and he will now be having regular appointments to help keep him mobile and comfortable. If this is the improvement after 1 treatment and 1 day, I can't wait to see how much progress we make!

After holding off as long as possible with no price rise for the last two years, unfortunately with increase in room rent and other rising costs it has become necessary to increase my price.

Follow up appointments will now be £45 in clinic as of the 2nd March. (All patients booked for Wednesday 1st March will remain at £40).

First appointments, horse appointments, dog appointments and home visits will all remain the same price (luckily we don't need to pay rent on the beautiful outside countryside! 😅).

I hope you understand this is not something I have done lightly, and as always a HUGE thank you for all the continued support - I love treating, talking and laughing with you all!

ADJUSTMENTS

Chiropractors are probably most commonly known for "clicking" people. But what actually is this? What is happening when you hear that "crack" and why do we do it? 🤔

At each appointment your chiropractor will carry out a detailed assessment to detect any joints that aren't moving as well as they should be. You may be aware of this and have symptoms of pain or stiffness in the area, or it may be a "restriction" further up or down that is influencing the way your body moves. For example, your low back may hurt as a result of your ankle or knee not functioning adequately, or visa versa.

Once the joint that is not moving adequately is identified, we can use an adjustment to restore this movement. The specific joint is taken into the direction it doesn't want to move in, and a low amplitude, high velocity thrust is applied (low force, quick speed!). This may give an audible release or "click" which is just the release of gas that had built up within the joint - just like the pressure release when you open a can of coke! No cracking bones 😉 The joint is now moving easily into the direction that before it was restricted in.

Benefits of adjustments are:
-restore movement of the restricted joint (increase range of movement generally)
-reduce pain and tension
-improve nerve function of the nerve level at that joint

Adjustments don't just take place in the spine, we also adjust extremity joints to keep your whole body moving and functioning to its optimum 💪

CHECKING MOLES 🕵️‍♂️

Any healthcare professional is likely to see parts of your body that you may not necessarily be able to see yourself, such as the top of your head or your back. Often moles can be spotted that you may not be aware of, and although most of the time they are nothing to worry about, I have had a few cases recently where they have been confirmed as a melonoma and removed - saving a lot of trouble later on! 🤗

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer, often caused by too much sun exposure. It appears as moles and can occur anywhere on the body, and can occur at any age. Early detection is crucial for melanomas to treated.

Look for anything new, changing or unusual. The ABCDE rule is a great way to check if your mole should be looked at.

A - is for Asymmetry. Most melanomas are asymmetrical

B - is for Border. Melanoma borders tend to be uneven and may have notched edges, unlike a common mole with a smooth border.

C - is for Colour. Multiple colours are a warning sign, eg different shades of brown, black or tan.

D - is for Diameter. It is ideal to detect a melanoma when small, but it is a warning sign if a lesion is the size of a pencil eraser or bigger.

E - is for Evolving. Any change in size, shape, colour or elevation of a spot on your skin, or any new symptom in it such as itching, bleeding, or crusting may be a warning sign.

If you notice any of these, contact your GP or a dermatologist. It is likely nothing to worry about, but if it is, an early diagnosis makes all the difference 👍

WARM UPS 🏃‍♀️

Why do we warm up before an activity or exercise? Is it really as important as people make out?

The answer... Yes!

Warming up = increases heart rate = increases blood flow to your muscles = increase in the oxygen levels that you need for your workout.

This improves your sports performance and decreases liklihood of injury 💪

Your body temperature also increases which allows muscles to contract more easily, and it activates the connections between your nerves and muscles, which improves the efficiency of the movement.

Usually a 10 minute active warm up is enough for light physical activity, involving some light aerobic activity and dynamic stretches that are specific to the activity you're about to do. For example fast paced walking, jogging on the spot, gentle squats or arm swings 🚶‍♀️

DO's: ✅
- start slowly and gradually build up (warm ups do not increase sports performance if they are too intense)
- engage the Cardiovascular system by focusing on the big muscle groups, such as legs
- only warm up until you are sweating lightly, not fatigued
- start your warm up right before the activity / race / game / workout etc

DONT's: ❌
- be too vigorous and energy draining
- do very short warm ups (this is not enough to warm up your muscles)
- do a warm up that is completely different to / doesn't fit your activity
- leave too much time between the warm up and activity

The power of an adjustment! 💥

Today Cosmo and I headed out for some local dressage (one day we'll both have our eyes open in the same photo 😅).

In her first test, we got an incorrect strike off on the right rein in canter, this is very unlike her! We tried again (twice!) and still the wrong leg. I took her back into the warm up for take 4 and she bucked on strike off which again is very unlike her. She was clearly telling me she was uncomfortable so I decided to give her a quick feel.

Completely sound and no signs of pain, but sure enough she was tight over her left SIJ (pelvis) and lower lumbars. Debating whether or not to do the next test, I decided it couldn't hurt to give her a quick few adjustments and then see how she feels, even if I just trot round the warm up.

I really wasn't expecting much after literally a 10 minute assess and adjust, but I got back on and she picked up on the correct leg, first time, no bucks, no objections!

We decided to go for the second test and she was foot perfect again, even got an increase in suppleness and contact marks from the first test so she must have been feeling better 🌟

Tomorrow she will have a proper treatment and a few days off, but I imagine that the tightness over her back and pelvis wasn't allowing her to engage the left hind, in order to get the right rein strike off. A few adjustments later and she was able to do it comfortably 🙌

Maybe she had slipped in the field, maybe it had been building for a while - unfortunately with horses you just never know 🤷‍♀️ But the big lesson here is to always listen if your horse is trying to tell you something. They're not being "naughty" they are just trying to communicate with you 😊

New year, new resolutions!

We all start the year with the best intentions, but how long does that actually last? 🙈 You all know I love to be optimistic, but unfortunately studies show that 43% of people have given up on their resolutions by only the third week of January 😯😳

How can we tackle this?!

How about instead of setting unrealistic expections, getting disheartened when we can't keep them up, and then giving them up all together, we try setting a single goal for the whole year?

This gives you time, no pressure, and is a great way to step back and work out what you want from the year ahead! 👊

Maybe your goal is to spend time outside, appreciate the people close to you more, or even go on a holiday or weekend away! Remember they don't have to be restrictive, or diet or fitness related 🤷‍♀️

Try writing your goal in a diary or journal, or sticking it on a post-it note on your wall to remind yourself. You can look back every few months to remember why that was important to you ☺️

Good luck! And remember, you can't fail a goal 🤷‍♀️ if it's not achieved, then it's just not finsihed yet!

FACT FRIDAY!

5 a day! 🍎🍇🥑🍌🥦

We all know eating fruit and veg as part of a balanced diet helps keep us healthy, but why is this so important? And is there actually health risks if we don't..?

Fruit and vegetables are an excellent source of folate, vitamin C and potassium. They are also an important source of fibre, which helps to maintain a healthy gut and prevent constipation and other digestive problems, especially reducing risk of bowel cancer. Risk of heart disease and stroke is also reduced 👏

Different fruit and veg have different nutritional benefits, so try to eat a variety of types to get the most from your 5 a day! Ideally aim for 400g a day minimum, and it doesn't matter if they're fresh, frozen, canned, dried or juiced!

Top tips to get your 5 a day in:

- Freeze your grapes and have a tasty sweet (and healthy!) snack instead of sweets or chocolate 🍇
- Spread kale on a baking tray and put in the oven at 180° for around 5 mins, enjoy a crispy snack instead of crisps 🥗
- Make a smoothie with 4 or 5 different types of fruit and veg, blend it up as a great way to get your portions in! 🍓
- Try replacing one meal a week with a vegetarian option, a great way to experiment and cook with more vegetables that you otherwise normally may not try 🌶️

Remember 5 a day is the start, not the limit 😁 enjoy! 🍒
